Bleeding Vessel

At long last I have completed my embroidery piece, Bleeding Vessel. I started the piece 27 July 2020 and finished stitching it 15 June 2022—almost two years.

An embroidery of a uterus stitched in black thread on white linen with texture like a woodcut. The mesometrium spreads like wings, the ovaries are ovals on the mesometrium, and the fimbriae on the ends of the fallopian tubes look like sea anemones. Inside the uterus, the edges of the endometrium are stitched in bright red thread with long and short stitch in a textured leaf pattern. The centre endometrium is filled with the same texture but in burgundy with thinner thread. The edges between the burgundy and the bright red are filled with single strand satin stitch with curlicue edges. There is an apple-sized half circle fibroid on the left upper area of the uterus and a strawberry sized one on the right lower side. Both fibroids are made of red, pink, and cream beads of various sizes. Another strawberry sized section of clear, purple, and red beads is a cyst over the right ovary, and a small section of dark red and purple beads are a polyp inside the endometrium. There are long burgundy strings hanging from the bottom of the endometrium with medium and large red beads on them that extended past the vaginal opening. The initials L. P. are stitched in white on the right side of the image. — Bleeding Vessel (2022). Cotton and nylon thread with glass beads on linen/rayon blend. Stitched area is 42 x 28 centimetres.

‘sensorium’ selected for SK Arts’ permanent collection

I’m very honoured that SK Arts has selected my embroidery sensorium (2016)—part of my symptomatology series—for purchase for their permanent collection.

sensorium is a depiction of the hypersensitivity and hyperexcitation of my nervous system due to ME/CFS and took approximately 60 hours to stitch. My main sensory sensitivity is to sound and vibration—hyperacusis—which can absolutely overwhelm me depending on the volume and timbre of the sound. My entire nervous system becomes involved, and though this symptom has improved with a lot of desensitization work it still affects me daily.

In the centre of some bone white linen, there is a spine embroidered in a thick satin stitch. Emanating from the spine are thick burgundy lines in an undulant oval shape. This oval is bisected across the middle. In the top half, there is a section outlined in burgundy filled with coiling blue lines and a similar section in the bottom half. The rest of the undulant oval is filled with fine coiling burgundy lines. The spine is very straight, the rest of the embroidery is very coiled and busy.

New Embroidery: lumen: the cell

I recently finished stitching this large (18″x12″) hand embroidery piece based on one of my SciArt text/image pieces. I’ve been working on this piece since June 18, 2018 and finished the stitching July 18, 2020, so it took just over two years to complete it. I’m very pleased with it! an embroidered image of a cell on a dusty blue linen. The parts of the cell are labeled with poetic text.

SciArt feature on Art the Science

Recent Embroidery Portfolio and Interview

In August 2019 I had a couple articles about my embroidery work go up online.

First, The Cardiff Review published a portfolio of my anatomy embroideries with some of my writing about that body of work.

Second, Action for M.E. published a short interview about my symptomatology embroideries.

Both these online magazines are based in the UK and I’m very happy to see my work getting attention over there!

I’m a New S.E.W Member

I’m pleased to announce that I’m a new member of S.E.W., The Society for Embroidered Work. S.E.W. is an international society of artists who work in embroidery as their medium. Membership is by application once or twice a year and chosen based on the quality of the artwork. I’m very honoured to be a part of this society, which is helping to bring embroidery into the art world as a serious medium.
