What is the soundbody?

The soundbody is the integration of two things that are integral to our physical, spiritual & emotional well-being: sound and body. The soundbody is about accessing these things by defining movement that has sound as its source and sound that has movement as its source, and by exploring how we can create movement that is viscerally connected to sound and vice versa. To quote Emilie Conrad-Dau'oud, founder of Continuum: "We do not move, we are movement. "We may say the same of sound: We do not make sound. We are sound."

What begins to happen when we move and make sound is that our physical bodies begin to integrate with our energetic bodies. This brings more light, more life, and more vitality into the system. Of course, as with any psycho-spiritual/physical practice, negative issues may rise to the surface. Issue that involve life path and life presence are particularly common in The soundbody work.

When these negativity's rise to the surface and we enact them with our bodies and voices in a supportive and safe environment the system is cleared, and the soul can push out through our patterns and controls. As Richard Armstrong of the Roy Hart Theatre says: "The voice is the muscle of the soul." And true enough, the voice is a muscle that can be made stronger and more flexible physically along with the rest of the body, and as the voice contains much of our power and presence in the world, if affects our soul.

We were born to move, we were born to make sound. Watch a newborn as they squirm and cry out when released from the womb. The body and voice cause us to breathe, to emote, to express. We are all physical and dynamic beings, and by integrating ourselves with movement and sound we may become more whole.
